Uplift yourself and get in a spirit of appreciation, gratitude, and praise in this generative poetry-writing workshop for writers of all kinds and at all levels of experience.

Praising is one of the first functions of poetry. Whether it be a love poem, an ode, an expression of gratitude, or something less overt, poems can help us find the beauty and wonder in the world around us.

In this live virtual generative workshop, you will:

  • Explore poems by Jessica Care Moore, Sharon Olds, Pablo Neruda, and Marilyn Nelson with attention to finding gems to make our own poems sparkle
  • Write three new poems to lively writing prompts that invite you to dive into various aspects of the art of praise.
  • Share your new creations in a supportive setting (if you wish).
  • Have a chance to ask your questions about the art and craft of poetry.
  • Receive a list of suggested publications to send your poems to, including literary journals with faster response times and higher acceptance rates, so you can get your words out in the world!

Carla M. Cherry is a veteran high school English teacher and candidate for an M.F.A. in Creative Writing at the City College of New York. Her poetry has appeared in Random Sample Review, MemoryHouse, Bop Dead City, Anti-Heroin Chic, 433, Raising Mothers and has been nominated for Best of the Net. Maxima Kahn‘s writing has been featured in The Louisville Review, Los Angeles Review, Wisconsin Review, Euphony, Sweet, Poem and many others, and on popular blogs such as The Creative Penn, Tiny Buddha, and The Startup. She has twice been nominated for Best of the Net, was a finalist for the Atlanta Review poetry contest, and has received scholarships and fellowships to the Community of Writers at Squaw Valley and the Vermont Studio Center. Her full-length collection of poems, Fierce Aria, was published by Finishing Line Press in 2020 and was a finalist for an Eric Hoffer Book Award.
